The soldier stood and faced God,

Which always must come to pass.

He hoped his shoes were shining,

Just as brightly as his brass.

'Step forward now soldier,

How shall I deal with you?

Have you always turned the other chhek?

To my church have you been true?"

The soldier squared his shoulders ans said,

"No, Lord, I guess I have not.

Because those of us who carry guns,

Can't aleays be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,

And at times my talk was tough,

And sometimes I've been violent,

Becaus the world is always rough.

But I never took a penny,

That wasn't mine to keep...

Though I worked a lot of overtime,

When the bills just got to steep. And I never passed a cry for help,

Though at times I shook with fear..

And sometimes, God, forgive me.

I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place, Among the people here.

They never wanted me around

Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,

It needn't be so grand.

I never expected or had too much,

But if you don't, I'll understand."

There was a silence all around the throne,

Where the saints had often trod.

As the soldier waited quietly,

For the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, you soldier,

You've borne your burdens well.

Walk peacefully on Heavens streets,

You've done your time in Hell."

It's thee Soldier, not the reporter

Who has given us the Freedom of the Press.

It's the Soldier, not the poet,

Who has given us the Freedom of Speech.

It's the Soldier, not the politicians

That ensures our right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happines..

It's the Soldier who salutes the Flag,

Who serves beneath the Flag,

And whose coffin is draped by the Flag.

I'm sure that this isn't entirely appropriate, Puss, but I'm reminded of the Mel Gibson movie, We Were Soldiers. There's this lull between firefights, I think when LtCol Hal Moore's (Mel Gibson) preparing his men and plans for the final assault upon the mountain. He queries his senior Sergeant, MsSgt Plumbly, played with the driest of humors, by Sam Elliot, "What do you think Custer would have done, Sergeant?", or something like that. Plumbly responds, "Sir, Custer was a pussy! You ain't no pussy!" Then Mel, as Moore gives him one of those fetching Gibsonian grins. Now retired General Moore led Custer's 7th Cavalry, by that time, the 7th Airborne(?) Assault Cavalry.

I always try to watch this movie around Memorial Day, just like I try and watch Rick Schroeder in The Lost Batallion, a movie about WW I, around Veteran's Day. They seem to be appropriate remembrances. I cannot believe that WW I happened almost 100 years ago.

I recommend two movies. 1. Flags of Our Fathers 2. Letters From Iwo Jima.
